Tooth or teeth when they are broken, damaged, discolored or infected need to be extracted. For extracting a tooth or teeth, the given area has to be numbed. In the case of wisdom teeth extractions, if the number of teeth extracted is more than one. Usually, general anesthesia is given. If it is just a single tooth which is being extracted then and only then is local anesthesia administered.
Teeth also need to be cleaning at times when a child or even an adult is going in for orthodontic treatment. For this, a few teeth need to be pulled out so that the others can find a place to fit in a correct and well-aligned manner. In the case of getting dental implants too, tooth or teeth need to be extracted. In their place, a titanium screw is embedded into the jaw-bone, and this acts as the root of the tooth. Also, a dental cap or crown is placed atop the screw to function as the tooth as the outside world sees it.
In the case of dentures too, tooth or teeth need to remove. An impression of these is taken along with that of the gums. This is then sent to the dental laboratory and dentures manufactured there. These are placed on top of the gums and adjusted there. Dentures, however, need to be replaced after every five to seven years. They tend to become loose with time. Dental implants, nonetheless, can last for the entire lifetime of the person if they are cared for properly. In both cases of dental implants as well as dentures, the aftercare of the treatment is very important.
How does one take care of dentures and dental implants?
Good oral hygiene habits must be maintained at all times. The patient should brush his or her teeth very properly twice a day for at least two minutes duration each time. It is best to at least rinse the mouth each time after food or drink consumption. Also, regularly scheduled visits to the dentist must be conducted so that any adjustments if required can be made in the dentures or the implants.
Dentures, however, cannot be worn at night. They had to be taken out and kept in a container with the cleaning solution into which a cleansing tablet has been added. They are also to be brushed with this solution. Also, it is a must to see that no build-up of plaque happens on the dentures. Professional cleaning can be done by a dentist so that this does not occur.
What does one do after tooth extraction?
After the tooth or teeth are extracted, one must make it a point to rest for the rest of the day. Also, physical exercise must not be done for at least a day or two. To stop the bleeding, the dentist may give a gauze pad which is to be pressed tightly at the site of extraction. This needs to be changed after every half an hour or so for at least a few hours. It may become soiled with blood and saliva after some time and thus needs to be changed.
